Japan declares AI and semiconductors as critical national technologies
Japan has officially elevated Artificial Intelligence (AI) and semiconductors to the status of national strategic technologies.
This bold shift in industrial policy is designed to bolster economic security and reduce reliance on fragile global supply chains.
Under the framework of the 2022 Economic Security Promotion Act (ESPA), the Japanese government plans to invest significantly to reclaim its position as a global leader in high-tech manufacturing.
The primary goal is to reach a top-three global ranking in AI and semiconductors by 2040.
To achieve this, Japan is committing over 10 trillion yen in funding to catalyze a larger 50 trillion yen public-private investment surge.
Beyond economic growth, these technologies are seen as essential solutions to Japan’s internal challenges, such as an aging population and labor shortages.
Furthermore, by integrating AI into robotics—a field known as Physical AI—Japan aims to leverage its existing industrial strengths.
This strategy also aligns with broader geopolitical efforts to ensure tech sovereignty and de-risk supply chains in a competitive global market.
Ultimately, Japan’s initiative represents a determined renaissance effort to transform itself back into a dominant force in the high-tech era.
