Modals: Ability (can/could)

Learn how to express present and past abilities using can and could.

We use the modal verb can to express physical ability or permission in the present. Modal verbs do not change forms based on the subject.

I can play tennis.

I can play tennis.

To describe ability or possibility in the past, we use could:

I could play soccer.

I could play soccer.
